Back in 2011, master mosaicist Gary Drostle received a TileLetter Award from NTCA for his River of Life Commercial Glass/Mosaic installation at the University of Iowa. Drostle also won the SAMA MAI Award in 2013 for best in show among his numerous accolades. He has been featured in TileLetter for his Hampton Inn mural at Lake Havasu and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital project in Stanford. Drostle has been creating large scale mosaics using the paper faced reverse technique for over 30 years, undertaking major commissions across the UK and in the USA, Canada and South America.
This summer, the famed Chicago Mosaic School (CMS) is offering a workshop with Drostle called Architectural Mosaics. This Architectural Mosaics class is an exclusive opportunity to learn about what goes into creating large-scale mosaic projects. In this six-day workshop, participants have the opportunity to learn the considerations, organizational needs and logistics that go into producing large-scale and public works. This workshop is geared for artists that want to move into larger public or community-based mosaics. Students will learn the paper-face indirect technique which enables the creation of larger works off-site. This technique is ideal for working with community groups, and creating floor, wall, and ceiling mosaics.
The CMS workshop covers all aspects of designing, making and installing large-scale mosaic works. Design considerations are addressed in the workshop and include discussion about cartoon creation, material selection, and planning andamento. Discussions and presentations will address the logistical considerations of large-scale works, such as sectioning the mosaic, organization and project management, site set up, equipment, health and safety, installation, and much more.
Students will have the opportunity to do hands-on practical work creating their own mosaic panel as well as working on a collaborative large scale work. This workshop is highly recommended to anyone considering creating or proposing large scale sustainable mosaic artworks. All materials are included. No prerequisite.
