San Francisco Airport Museum hosts California Decorative Tile exhibit with pieces from the Tile Heritage Foundation collection

This holiday season, and through June 8, 2025, visitors to the International Terminal at San Francisco Airport can enjoy selected pieces of California decorative tile from the Tile Heritage Foundation collection. The exhibit opened on October 26, 2024.

Gallery 4A is pre-security in the International Terminal, Departures Level 3, for maximum enjoyment by visitors and passengers.

The California Decorative Tile exhibit features a range of tiles from the early 20th century and California ceramicists’ golden era of tilemaking.

Marvel at the artistry, handwork, rich colors, historical romanticism and examples of tile making techniques from the 1910s-1940s on display. See works of slip-glazed earthenware from Batchelder-Wilson, Claycraft Potteries of Los Angeles, and Muresque Tiles of Oakland; and glazed earthenware from California Faience of Berkeley and Solon & Schemmel of San Jose. Styles include Arts and Crafts Tile, relief tiles, cuenca and cuerda seca tiles, and “Mayan Revival” or Pre-Hispanic Revival designs and motifs — and more!

Eighty vintage tiles are on display, as well as historic catalogs and other ephemera on loan from The Tile Heritage Foundation collections.

(L to R): Batchelder-Wilson; Claycraft Potteries; California Faience; Solon & Schemmel; Muresque Tiles.
