Art tile exhibit illustrates the textile heritage of South Carolina

(Simpsonville, SC)— The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) welcomes the public to attend the festive opening reception of the Tile Heritage Foundation’s exhibit, TexTILES, December 1, 2023, 6–9 pm at No. 3 Pottery, 105 S. Maple Street, Simpsonville, SC 29681.

TexTILES is a juried exhibition and sale that explores contemporary tile making. A national call for entries was issued in June for artists to submit new works using ceramic tile, ceramic mosaic, or glazed brick to reflect the artists’ interpretation of the complex history of the textile industry in South Carolina, once known as the Textile Capital of the World. Internationally recognized ceramists and educators of Clemson University, Valerie Zimany and Daniel Bare, served as jurors to award over $3,000 in prizes.

“This exhibition showcases tile artisans from across the country in an exhibition unique to South Carolina,” remarked Sheila Menzies of the Tile Heritage Foundation. “We are fortunate to display the exhibition in the upstate within a historic mill community, such as Simpsonville.”

Participating tile artisans include nationally acclaimed artists such as Sherri Warner Hunter, Janet Kozachek, and Susan Tunick. An additional piece in the show was made from an original design by Henry Chapman Mercer, compliments of TileWorks Executive Director, ceramist and mosaic artist, Katia McGuirk.

The TexTILES exhibition and sale opening will include refreshments by Charcuterthree and a visitor from the North Pole! The public is encouraged to attend this free event and kick off the holiday season Friday, December 1, 2023, 6–9 pm. The exhibition will run December 1-30, 2023, Wednesday through Saturday, 11 am–5 pm, at No. 3 Pottery, 105 S. Maple Street, Simpsonville, SC 29681 (no admission fee). In addition, the exhibition and sale will have a virtual on-line catalog from December 1-30, 2023.

The TexTILES exhibition and sale benefits the Tile Heritage Foundation, the participating artists, and No. 3 Pottery.

Generous local and national sponsors for the exhibition include TCNA, the Simpsonville Arts Foundation, Laticrete, Heritage Marble & Tile, Material Bespoke Stone and Tile, Merola Tile, and NS Ceramic.
