The industry’s leading tile installation magazine

HomeContentEditor's LetterA tremendous power

A tremendous power

“Women, whether subtly or vociferously, have always been a
tremendous power in the destiny of the world.”
— Eleanor Roosevelt

Congratulations! You’ve made it to March, the gateway to spring, and in this issue, a celebration of the tremendous power of women in our industry.

The construction industry has shown a mixed acceptance of women in the trades over the years, but in the tile segment, women are gaining more acceptance – and acclaim – as powerful leaders, managers, visionaries, creatives, installers and artisans.

By the time you read this issue, the March 8 All-Women’s CTI test should be underway (see our February issue for this story), with an enthusiastic, dedicated throng of women testing their mettle at tile setting and being upheld by a band of industry supporters.

In THIS issue, we take a closer look at powerhouses Megan Garvey of Welch Tile, Sheila Menzies, co-founder of Tile Heritage Foundation, and Leslie Del Pozo of QEP in our 15th Women in Tile story. Learn more about their journeys and what they bring to the table to benefit the industry.

Tile artist Rhoda Kahler is featured in our Artisan story. She tackled a massive handmade tile project at the Nashville Zoo, and got installation assistance and support from local NTCA members and LATICRETE.

Speaking of LATICRETE, read about how a broad range of its products including its shower solutions, and SUPERCAP underlayment system brought speed, efficiency, and performance to a high-visibility Michigan Medicine Hospital.

Meet NTCA Member Sarah Thelen, who was mentored by the legendary Dan Hecox, and whose influence and inspiration moved her to obtain her Certified Tile Installer credential.

Coverings is next month, so we give you an overview of key NTCA and contractor-centric events on tap at that event. Be sure to visit coverings.com for up-to-the-minute details on scheduling and location.

Learn more about grout in our Webinar Summary, and about the critical importance of movement joints in our Technical article.

We also pause to remember Steve Renkert, a beloved industry member, known for his role at Metropolitan Brick Company (now Ironrock Capital, Inc.) and how he presided over the firm’s growth.

We all support each other in this industry, and in our world. This issue gives us a chance to recognize the various talents, skills and perspectives that help make our industry great, strong and expansive. Thanks for all the ways YOU add to that diversity.

God bless,
Lesley
